Skyggnissteinn - English Intro

Dagný Guðmundsdóttir and Sigurður Jónsson live at Skyggnissteinn, a homestead in Bláskógabyggð close to Geysir in the south of Iceland. Dagný is a visual artist and teacher and used to work at Árbæjarsafn outdoor museum. Siggi studied Icelandic and has a background in IT for education. Then their dream of returning to nature knocked on the door.

We keep a few chickens, grow vegetables, berries and herbs for our own use as well as foraging wild plants and preserving the crops in a variety of ways for use during the long winter. We try to learn from experimenting along the lines of organic agriculture and permaculture.

To the north of Skyggnissteinn extend the vast Icelandic Highlands while across the river Tungufljót there is the ancient manor Haukadalur. In the middle of the 20th century the land was endangered by erosion until the Dane Kristian Kirk bought the property and handed it over to the State Forestry for soil preservation.

Skyggnissteinn has a small house with attached plant pavillion, chicken coop, a wood stove sauna barrel, a root cellar, vegetable gardens, cold frames, greenhouses and a forest. In additional there is dense wild vegetation with some planted trees along the river Tungufljót and an islet. The property is characterized by deep soil with abundant fresh water.
